Round the Island Trip

Saturday morning i woke up and i received a letter to collect a parcel at the Parcel Post Office in Port Louis. I took my bike and at 9h30 am i left to collect the parcel. At 10h30 i already had the parcel and it looked too early to return back home… why not for a ride to the west? I started on from La Tour Koenig and off i was to a trip round the island (over 280km!!) Trip details below:

Actually I was about to describe in details the route details but then well, for most part the villages looked rather alike, and I rather decided to show some pictures instead with a brief description of the region…

So, the starting point of this trip was ‘La Tour Koenig’ in the north-west area of the island and after some time I reached Case ‘Noyale’…

This is actually a stitching of several full size images to form a panoramic view of this part of the island which is just by the sea. The view is splendid specially on a nice weather like that. It is actually a straight road but since this is a whole 180 degree view it will look bent, obviously.

‘Le Morne Village’ is actually a very nice fishing village where you can see life in a simple way. Fishing!

Saint Martin, if I remember well the name, is after the Maconde bridge.

Bel Ombre, Villas! The small buildings are the far end are actually the IRS Villas still under construction at this time the picture was taken (Aug 2010). Of course, sugar cane cutting season was recently over as the cane field on the right looks to be no more until the next sowing. Ha! The guy on the left in the ‘golf’ caddi was kinda lost I guess…

This place is ‘Riviere des Galets’ which when translated in english would rather say ‘The rivr of pebbles’… but for sure I couldnt find the river. Normally, in Mauritius you have sandy beaches at most places round the island, but this is among the few places where pebbles replace the sand entirely. I wonder it this is man-made or natural?? In fact, for those living in Mauritius and who haven’t actually been there… make sure you do visit this place. The sound when the waves crash against the shore and the pebbles is very beautiful. It is like the rocks are talking in their language and in full surround mode!! Believe me!

This is ‘Plaisance’! The only airport of Mauritius. The picture might not give you good details but on the middle right you can see the airfield where the planes land and further is the terminal where the planes go. One day I’ll try to take pictures of landing planes at the end of the field, of course, behind fences!

The ruins of the colonial french fort during their reign on the island in the early days the island was captured from the Dutch. The fort is actually only bits and pieces since it looked like it has been through a war. This is actually at the other side of the Museum which showed remains from that place. Should be a national monument and preservation I guess.

This rather concludes the trip which was all in itself wonderful and tiresome, but well worth it. All I can say is that it should be done again! Of course, at different periods of the year the weather itself is different and the mood also is different. Next time I’m planning to do it in reverse! So be it…
